India lost the 3-match Test series against New Zealand, losing the third and final match by 25 runs in Mumbai. This will affect their position in the WTC Points Table and WTC final hopes. India, though, remains at the top of the table with a very crucial 5-match Test series against Australia still to come. This loss saw India slip to the bottom of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 rankings. The battle for the WTC final is getting fiercer as Australia and teams like Sri Lanka and New Zealand follow the ladder closely.

Table: WTC Points Table after India vs New Zealand Test Series

How could Team India qualify for WTC Final 2025?

Rohit Sharma led India would need to ensure a 4-1 series win over Australia after losing the final Test of their series against New Zealand in Mumbai, for them to be assured of the top-two finish in this WTC cycle. That would take India’s points to 64.04 per cent. India will have to win four out of their remaining six games, which includes the Test against New Zealand in Mumbai, to qualify for the WTC final without being dependent on other teams’ results.

Even two Test series wins at 2-0 should enable Australia to reach 60.53 per cent in case they navigate the series against Sri Lanka. New Zealand can go only up to 57.14 per cent if they have their backs against the Mumbai wall while winning 3-0 against England during their final series of this WTC cycle. Under those circumstances, South Africa should be the only country above India. In the event of the series ending 2-2, if India wins in Mumbai and Australia dispatches Sri Lanka 2-0, India will have 60.53 per cent against Australia’s 62.28 per cent.
